The caves

The abyss of Tanzerloch.

The abyss of Tanzerloch.

The second karstic massif in Europe, the Plateau is crossed by many underground caves. Over 3000 of them have been explored, the deepest of which (1,011 metres) is the Abisso (Abyss) of Malga Fossetta. Among the most spectacular caves, and more easily accessible, there is certainly the Tanzerlock, less than a kilometre west of the center of Camporovere, in the northern slope of the Val d’Assa. This is a huge open chasm with an opening of about 40 metres in diameter and 80 in depth. Its name (“Buco delle Danze”, Hole of the Dances) dates back the origin of the cave to the ancient legend of a young shepherd who, in search of the little disappeared sister, attended the obscene dance of a group of witches with the devil, which terminates by invoking St. Michael the Archangel at loud voice and throwing a cross among them. With a strong rumble the earth opens up and swallows them all. The Leute Kuvala (Cave of the People) is located at the Bisele, in the territory of Canove, where the Ghelpach creek flows into the Val d’Assa. You can visit it going down the road through a short but rather difficult trail equipped with iron rungs. Spectacular, from the second room, the vision of a large boulder wedged in the window that overlooks the valley.

Five hundred metres to the south-east of the Rifugio Campolongo, in the municipality of Rotzo, there is the abyss of the Sciason, 96 meters deep. A large window accessible from the outside, on the north wall, allows you to see the first well from a kind of balcony suspended 30 meters over the ground.

Among the numerous sinkholes around the summit of the Monte Chiesa, there is the spectacular Buso del Giasso, 200 meters north of the peak, with a spectacular entrance and a real glacier inside.
